Manager Mauricio Pochettino says that he believed about Tottenham’s'painful’ Champions League final defeat’much’ during summer time as they prepare for their opening game of the year’s contest.
Spurs lost 2-0 to Liverpool in their Champions League final in June.
They start their new European effort against Greek side Olympiakos at Piraeus on Wednesday (17:55 BST).
“It was a very long time following the final in Madrid,” said Pochettino.
“Being honest I was thinking a lot during the summertime. Because you can’t put the atmosphere to complete losing the final is obviously so painful and you will need to wait to begin again to fix the harm.
“It’s exciting to start a new effort and now here in Greece. It’s definitely going to be an incredible atmosphere too.”
Pochettino has played Tottenham’s chances of repeating last year’s Champions League run, which contained a dramatic semi-final second leg victory off at Ajax.
He also states the club need to understand lessons from the poor start at the group stage last year, where they shot just one point from their opening three games.
“No-one today is thinking or giving us chance to become a contender to become in the final in Istanbul this season,” added the Argentine, who will take charge of the 50th European match for Tottenham in Greece.
“But that is normal. That makes it again exciting, our run in the Champions League.
“We all know we have to start by winning. You are able to speak but you want to show your quality. We need to show we’ve learned from the past.”
Defenders Danny Rose and Serge Aurier happen to be rested and did not go with the squad, with Pochettino saying he will make changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace 4-0 past weekend.
Ryan Sessegnon also failed to travel after reporting irritation with a former hamstring strain while fellow summer signing Giovani Lo Celso is out until at least the end of October with a hip injury.
Juan Foyth comes after a foot problem in training but is not anticipated to come back to action for another few weeks.
