Bundee Aki has pledged to keep on doing Ireland joyful, despite announcing”some people will not be pleased with me pulling on an Irish jersey”.
New Zealand-born with heritage abandoned his native Auckland to look for a better life – settling in Galway and thriving with Connacht.
Aki qualified for Ireland on residency, going on to provide a formidable midfield existence and which makes his Test debut in 2017 Joe Schmidt’s squad.

“Some individuals won’t be happy with me pulling an Irish jersey but I felt just like playing this country, putting in the hard work, anything could happen.
“They are more than capable to have their own view. That’s the way they think and how they process it. They are highly respected by me and I’ve got nothing towards them.
“All I’ve got to do is just make sure I put into a performance and do everything I could do, and that’s merely to work on the field, and that is all I could ask for.
“Hopefully I do myself happy, I do my team-mates joyful, make sure I do my family joyful and most of all, the nation proud.
“That’s all I can do realistically as a rugby player.”
When he quit the sport to work as an Auckland bank teller to supply for his family aki was nearly lost to rugby.

“Connacht’ve supported me from day one when I arrived and Galway, everybody knows how friendly they are and how they are such fantastic men and women. I call it my home at the present time and I’m sure people will feel as though I’m one of them as well.”
