The rivalry between Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator might not be continuing in the 2016 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, but oddsmakers are currently expecting a close race yet.
Exaggerator, that took second in the Kentucky Derby and won the Preakness to hand his first loss of his livelihood to Nyquist, is the preferred in the latest odds, according to the sportsbooks at Bovada. He stands at 5-4 odds (9-5 morning line) to acquire at the $1.5 million, 1-1/2-mile race.
Nyquist’s trainers decided to maintain the horse from running at the final Triple Crown race, which is held at Elmont, N.Y. having a formal post moment of 6:37 p.m. ET. It was expected by many pundits that Exaggerator, known for capability and his kick to conserve energy until the last stretch of the trail, would be the favorite even if the Derby winner had remained in the lineup.
The expectation that the weather can bring rain showers only helps Exaggerator’s odds as he has run three of his career races on paths.
The absence of this Kentucky Derby winner hasn’t prevented oddsmakers from finding competitions they expect to do from the Belmont Stakes. The two Suddenbreakingnews and the speedy Stradivari possess 7-1 chances (10-1 and 5-1 morning line( respectively) while Destin comes into race day at 8-1 (6-1) and Cherry Wine in 9-1 (8-1) chances.
Suddenbreakingnews was the fifth-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby and is considered a possible upset pick as a result of the track and capability to maintain a steady pace during a race. Cherry Wine needed a good showing when he came from behind to pass Nyquist for second place, and is also expected to do with the length.
Stradivari finished fourth in the Preakness after some chatter of a possible mad, and Destin was in the Kentucky Derby.
