The growing competition between Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist might not be continuing in the 2016 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, but oddsmakers are expecting a race.
Exaggerator, that took second in the Kentucky Derby and won the Preakness to hand Nyquist his first loss of his career, is the preferred in the most recent odds, according to the sportsbooks in Bovada. He currently stands at 5-4 chances (9-5 morning ) to win at the $1.5 million, 1-1/2-mile race.
Nyquist’s coaches decided to keep the horse from running in the final Triple Crown race, which will be held at Elmont, N.Y. with an official post time of 6:37 p.m. ET. Many pundits expected it that Exaggerator, known for his overdue kick and capability to conserve energy until the last stretch of the trail, are the favorite even if the Derby winner had stayed in the lineup.
Exaggerator’s odds are just helped by the anticipation that the weather could bring rain showers as he’s run three of his very best career races, including his victory in the Preakness, on tracks.
From finding competitions they expect to do in the Belmont Stakes, oddsmakers haven’t been prevented by the lack of the Kentucky Derby winner. The two Suddenbreakingnews along with the speedy Stradivari possess 7-1 chances (10-1 and 5-1 morning lineup , respectively) while Destin comes into race day at 8-1 (6-1) and Cherry Wine at 9-1 (8-1) odds.
Suddenbreakingnews has been the fifth-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby and is thought to be a potential upset choice thanks to the track and ability to keep a steady pace throughout a race. Cherry Wine is also expected to perform with the extra length, and needed a good showing when he came out of pass Nyquist for second location.
Stradivari finished fourth in the Preakness and Destin was in the Kentucky Derby.
The field begins to taper off from there, with the Cause of Brody and Governor Malibu holding Lani and 14-1 odds and Creator in 16-1. Longshots Gettysburg, Seeking the Soul, Permanently d’Oro and Trojan Nation have 40-1 chances as of 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
