Mason Greenwood is from the England U21 squad but would he be a regular in the Manchester United first-team too? That’s the view of both team-mates and former coaches who speak of a gift who’s capable of making it into the surface, writes Adam Bate.
Marcus Rashford calls him frightening. Luke Shaw calls him unbelievable. Players praise his adulthood and his mindset. Supporters liken him to Robin van Persie. There is an area that’s opened up to emerge, as the highly-paid flops depart Manchester United and teenager Mason Greenwood fits the profile perfectly.
The academy grad to represent United is somewhat special. You will find glimpses of that even in his short cameo in Southampton. Greenwood might have won a punishment had the referee spotted the kick that was inadvertent he obtained from Stuart Armstrong on and forced a good save from Angus Gunn after introducing some of his stepovers.
A starting spot is unlikely to be much away to get a player who scored more than a goal a match for the U18 and U23 sides of United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already trusted Greenwood off the seat that memorable March night at Paris and given him his complete Premier League introduction on the final day of last year when he described him as the team’s”best player by a mile”.
However, it was in fact that Solskjaer convinced that he was ready. A goal against Leeds helps but there has been greater than that. There was time he twisted and flipped that the Perth Glory defence indoors. There was his goal from Inter, even though his drag-back because game made a fool out of the expert Milan Skriniar.
A certain irony is that Greenwood impressed. They are United’s past today. Still only 17, Greenwood is the long run. Perhaps even the current. That’s the way it is seen by Solskjaer. “Mason’s pathway would have been far harder if we had another ahead here,” he explained recently.
It seems sure that Greenwood can get his opportunity. The major question is when he receives it how good he can become. What sets him apart from the rest and where exactly will he fit to the United team? Neil Dewsnip has been Greenwood’s trainer with all the England U18 team this past year and that he sees him as a person with the mentality and ability to succeed.
“He’s highly encouraged to be the best that he can possibly be that is always a massive power in a young player,” Dewsnip informs Sky Sports.
“In the England U18 team he played as an out-and-out centre-forward down the center and did fairly well in that role but we also used him in wide regions as well, especially on the right side of the field where he could cut on his left foot and buckle it quite nicely.
“He has certainly got an eye for goal, so I’d concur with his supervisor he can evaluate a variety of goals. He can get in behind defences and is quite fast, direct. He is also smart enough to combine with his team-mates. So he has an intriguing package growing.”
When there is not any club like United, However, will he be able to put that package together? Will a player who had to go back to school the day after playing his part over Paris Saint-Germain cope with the pressure of needing to deliver in arguably the biggest club in the world? Will he really be able to deal with all that?
“I think he could,” adds Dewsnip. “Front players have a tendency to bring that with them. They like to score targets. They are excited about that. I really don’t believe he will be fazed by Old Trafford. I believe it will be relished by him. The audience has started to develop an awareness about him. It remains to be seen if he could provide but I do not believe he is going to be fazed by it.”
Speaking to one of his senior colleagues, it seems Greenwood does not have any reason to be fazed. Where the walls are adorned by photos of graduates, Luke Shaw smiles once Greenwood’s name is cited. He has been confronted by the left-back in training. He understands what’s awaiting Premier League defences.
“He’s a really amazing player, an unbelievable talent and it’s crazy to think he is only 17,” Shaw informs Sky Sports. “There is so much more to come out of him but there is so much he’s doing at this time. Each time he performs is currently impressing with and every time that he trains he wishes to learn. Ole has massive beliefs in him and so do the rest of us”
Both Lingard and Rashford have predicted Greenwood and there’s a calmness to his match. He’s seen by both as a pure finisher – the remarkable thing being that he could do it with both feet taking penalties together with his supposedly poorer. He played at a deeper character in his younger days but was moved forward due to his finishing ability.
Much more than just a poacher, he is a dribbler too with good pace – that his sister is on an athletic scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University. Greenwood has comparable all-natural gifts, blessed with strength in addition to speed and skill. Even as a teenager, he’s got the upper body strength to hold his mark off and change the play by simply hitting sweeping passes.
Manchester United prefer to keep a lid on those things as best they could, limiting his media activities. However, the secret is out. It is known by the United supporters along with it is known by his United team-mates too. “We all know what he will be bringing for the group very soon,” adds Shaw. “He just needs to keep his head down and work hard along with his talent will flourish.
“He could be among the finest in the world.”
It’s some solace for United and high praise even as their rivals are still outperform them. The impulse over the past six seasons has been to devote their way back but is a realization now that, even for a club of their resources, this can be impossible. There needs to be a plan. They need to construct. And it’ll take time.
Just as they always have, they need to rely upon an academy graduate or 2. Scott McTominay proceeds to develop, embodying the spirit of hard work which each and every supporter wishes to see from their players. But Greenwood has the power to provide that and more. He is a player with that bit of dream to his game. A participant who will make United believe again.
“This group has got energy, it’s got childhood,” said Gary Neville to some recent appearance on Monday Night Football. “I enjoy it. It is not slow, but it’s not methodical, but it’s not boring. With some additions, they’ve a good probability of doing some thing in two years, In case it grows. It is not going to occur overnight but I’m happier with what United are.”
When Greenwood gets a run in the group, the Manchester United supporters will be happier. They may not have to wait.
