DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Brendan Gaughan is the son of a casino magnate and has long grasped the allure of throwing down a few bucks to bet on a sporting occasion.
Heck, Gaughan once bet on himself in Las Vegas to win the 2004 Daytona 500. Gaughan got a stern talking to from NASCAR back in the day when gambling was possibly the most taboo topic in sports. March Madness brackets, Super Bowl prop bets, they all go overboard with the biggest games as much as the highlights, but wagers on the upstart underdog or 5-1 favored were stored for Vegas, office pools and the neighborhood bookie working illegally.
But social attitudes — and more importantly, laws — toward betting have evolved, leading even sports leagues to loosen their stances as a new world of potential partnerships and revenue streams has opened.
Count NASCAR as the game racing toward the gaming market.
“The more people betting and playing fantasy games on your game, the more people see,” Gaughan said during Daytona 500 qualifying. “NASCAR has ever known that. They still know that.”
Gaughan is pleased to give NASCAR fans and the gambling public the latest inside scoop on this sport. He co-hosts both the”Fantasy Racing Preview with Pete Pistone” on SiriusXM and”Gone Racin” on VSiN, a national sports gaming news community.
“When it comes to fantasy sports and betting on NASCAR races, there’s nothing wrong with this,” Gaughan said.
NASCAR is on board — and on the gambling boards of sportsbooks out of Nevada and beyond — with legalized gambling in 2019.
“I wanted to really go all in on gaming a year ago,” NASCAR executive Steve O’Donnell stated.
But NASCAR took a step back and watched the gaming landscape before implementing gambling guidelines in the rulebook for this season. One of the new restrictions: drivers and team members are prohibited from betting on races or disclosing personal details. They’re allowed to take part in fantasy sports concerning both national touring series, Cup, Xfinity and Truck, but might not accept prizes with a value of greater than $250 in any games. The bans are in line with other major sports.
NASCAR partnered with Sportradar Integrity Services to create a comprehensive gaming policy meant to protect the game from cheating scandals.
“We’ve got so many people who are linked to the automobiles. I believe that the ethics is a big piece for it,” O’Donnell explained.
But lovers? Prepare for action.
Nevada’s effective monopoly on sports gambling ended last spring, when the Supreme Court ruled the ban ought to be lifted. Casinos in seven other states — Rhode Island, Delaware, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Mexico — currently accept wagers on sports. The list is expected to rise by following year with numerous states considering bills.
