Tributes have been paid to cuts guy Benny King after he passed out this week at the age 78.
A notable figure in Scottish boxing for a number of years, King firstly worked the corner as a coach and subsequently became a cuts man for a long collection of boxers, including Craig Docherty, Kevin Anderson Jawaid Khaliq, Tony Dodson, Mark Hobson, James Hare and Kris Carslaw.
Director Tommy Gilmour and scottish promoter praised the service and devotion of the Greenock guy.
Hes been my pal to get 40-odd decades, said Gilmour. All the places that I went in the planet, Benny came along with me.
There has been a lot of unforgettable nights. Craig Docherty got cut and he is retained fighters. He had been always well respected, no matter which side of the fence he worked for.
His loyalty was beyond doubt, I think that has been one of the strongest points. He was so loyal to me along with the rest of my loved ones, that you could not have wished for a friend, or even a better colleague.
We all took him all around the world together with usand he always kept everyone together, and the fighters loved him. He gained everyones respect as well as their friendship
Gilmour demonstrated how Kings clinical skills were utilised throughout a traffic crash.
We could observe that this lorry turning , got out of the car, and Benny at the point, he had had a good deal of trouble with his back, but the adrenaline should have been draining.
He jumped up onto the cottage, got the fella out. He had a cut eye and Benny saysGo and get my cut equipment out. Benny patched the guy up in the side of the road before the ambulance arrived.
Ring Announcer Craig Stephen remembered how Kings calm schooling for a cornerman helped Kevin Anderson to a name win over Young Mutley in 2006.
Benny told it was, explained Stephen. Kevin Anderson from Young Mutley, I wasnt working the fight, but I had been there and quite near the corner. Kevin was in trouble, however, Benny was cool at the corner always.
Kevin looked up and movedhes broke my teeth, and Benny just looked at him and saidIll get you a new one and got on with it. He kept him going and Kevin eventually stopped Young Mutley.
Billy Nelson, who has coached a number of Scotlands most successful fighters, hailed Kings professionalism.
Benny was a well-liked and calm man. He had time for everybody.
A wealth of understanding of boxing. An all-round fine guy. You knew you had a good, reliable man working on your corner, if he was performing your reductions, and he gave you good advice following the struggle.
Fellow coach Colin Belshaw benefited from the wise words of King, who passed on his experience.
He worked with Kris Carslaw and myself at the British title battle against Brian Rose, explained Belshaw. Kris had a horrible cut early on and Benny held that together from the next until the 12th round.
He talked me through, helped me to do cuts myself, and I went to work in that area.
I think he will return as an iconic name, a real legend. He put an awful lot of his own entire life into boxing
